An Unconventional Guide to Canadian Thanksgiving: Embracing the 'Pay the Nice Lady' Cookbook
Oct 10, 2025
Ah, the beauty of Canadian Thanksgiving! The fall colours, family gatherings, baking, and pickles straight from the garden. It's all so picturesque, it's almost as if Martha Stewart herself has painted the scene. But let's be honest, unless you're a hosting aficionado with an abundance of time on your hands, the reality might look a little different. You might find yourself at Costco, eyeing those gigantic pumpkin and apple pies, and wondering if anyone would notice the difference.
The "Pay the Nice Lady" Cookbook:
For a long time, I've been a proud user of the "Pay the Nice Lady" cookbook. For those unfamiliar with this culinary gem, it involves paying the nice lady at the store for her deliciously prepared food, and passing it off as your own. Few are the wiser, and it saves a whole lot of stress and time.
Don't get me wrong, I love baking. But if adding a few drops of pumpkin spice essential oil to my diffuser can create the illusion of a day spent slaving over a hot stove, freeing me up to enjoy a hike with the family, then that's the route I'm taking.
Beautiful fall days last about as long as Thanksgiving dinner. You can either enjoy it or miss it because you're stressed out over the stove. The choice is yours.
Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy the holiday and give thanks for your loved ones. Remember, being good to yourself is just as important as being good to others.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. How do you balance the demands of hosting with the desire to enjoy the holiday? Share your tips and tricks in the comments below!
